CEO Update May 2015

It’s hard to believe that we’re quickly approaching the second half of the year. This means that we’ll soon be seeing the results of the research and consultation ARUP Pty Ltd have been doing to create an Infrastructure Masterplan for the Orana and Far West Regions, and we will be refining our business plan for 2015/16.

Of course, this time of year means one thing: budget. You can read our Chair’s reflections on this year’s budget here.

Along with the announcement of the budget came the announcement of Round 2 of the National Stronger Regions Fund. NSRF is a national incentive to fund infrastructure projects that will drive ongoing economic growth in disadvantaged areas. This is a highly competitive fund and we recommend anyone looking to apply read the guidelines thoroughly and ensure they have ample documentation and evidence on-hand to prove the quality of their project.

Over the past year you will have heard mention of the Work Inspiration program. After a lot of coordination we held the first Work Inspiration forum in the region in July last year, with plans to conduct a pilot of the program in Dubbo before 12 months had passed.

We are proud to say that this has happened to great feedback and results, one employer commenting that since their Work Inspiration has run they have received calls from students and parents enquiring about part-time work at the business. You can read our take on the pilots here or head over to Dubbo’s Daily Liberal to see what the students had to say.

Work Inspiration is, of course, a long term strategy to build aspiration and keep students in, or returning to, the region for work. A short term strategy is our Korean Trainee Project, which will work to build bilateral relations, increasing trade and investment opportunities, as well as ensure the Orana region is able to participate in one of Australia’s greatest export industries – international education.

Finally, we’ve also been hitting the road and speaking to businesses all around the region about the Emissions Reduction Fund. Thanks to our expert panel we’re able to share 10 great insights from some roundtable discussions held to give businesses more insight on how to participate.
