Second auction announced for the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF)

Second auction announced for the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF)

The Clean Energy Regulator has announced the second Emissions Reduction Fund auction for carbon abatement contracts. The auction will follow a similar format to the first auction, with a single round of bidding through AusTender on 4 and 5 November 2015.The auction guidelines will be published on 21 August 2015.

“People who are considering developing a proposal need to be aware that the cut-off date for participation in this round is Friday 18 September,” said Felicity Taylor-Edwards, CEO of RDA Orana. “Developing a proposal and having it registered takes some time, and if your project isn’t registered by this date you’ll miss this round.” Auctions are only announced when the Clean Energy Regulator determines that there are sufficient projects registered, so the date of the third auction is unknown.

RDA Orana has prepared a guide for businesses considering participating in the ERF. It includes a list of some of the Carbon Agents who can help develop projects and progress them through to auction and implementation. The guide is available from our website

There have been some recent changes to the available methods for carbon abatement, including a new method for the land sector – model-based soil carbon. “This method uses default values from a modelling program to estimate carbon, rather than expensive and onerous direct monitoring,” Felicity said.

“While there is a minimum number of carbon credits required for participation in the ERF, small project proposals can still participate through a process called aggregation” Felicity said. “We encourage smaller operators who are interested to read the new fact sheet on aggregation available from the Clean Energy Regulator’s website, or to contact us for more information.”
