Our small towns need support to keep them thriving

Creating vibrant communities and investing in their inhabitants is the way to keep them thriving, Regional Development Australia (RDA) Orana executive officer Megan Dixon said in response to the release of the Regional Australia Institute’s (RAI) Small Towns Report Card.

The study showed that small towns are missing out in the two main areas of health and education - with access to psychologists, preschool teachers and dentists all scoring an ‘F’ on the report card.

This week’s announcements by two local developers of their intent to develop mixed use properties within the Dubbo CBD provides a further example of the region’s transformation and growth, RDA Orana Executive Officer Megan Dixon said.

“Both developments will provide opportunity for new retail offerings, additional jobs and yet another attraction for visitors and locals to the area.”

Mrs Dixon said investment by both companies in Dubbo is already contributing to increased activity in the city centre and more job opportunities, particularly for young people in the region.

The Unravelling the Skills of the Future for the Orana Region project being conducted by Regional Development Australia (RDA) Orana is in its final days, with businesses in the region encouraged to participate.

“The survey is going really well, we have had 150 responses and our goal is 220.”

Employers are being targeted to seek information about their present and upcoming innovation, training, labour and skills requirements.

Freight task expected to triple by 2050

Regional Development Australia (RDA) Orana chair John Walkom said a study commissioned by the organisation predicts the regional freight task will grow significantly over the next 20 years, with an increase of 76 per cent on current volumes expected by 2035.

Mr Walkom said the Orana Freight and Logistics Capability Study, conducted by Urbis, showed that the NSW Freight task was expected to double by 2030 and triple by 2050.*

A study commissioned by Regional Development Australia (RDA) Orana has found that an international air freight facility would be possible in the region, sometime in the future, Chair John Walkom said.

Conducted by Urbis, the Orana International Air Freight Feasibility Study showed that Dubbo City Regional Airport would offer the best location for the hub, given its level of infrastructure and facilities. However, some changes would be needed to bring it up to international standards.

On the weekend, an Orana economic development group promoted the Orana region at the Regional Living Expo in Sydney. This formed part of the ongoing campaign and new brand for the region, Love the Life We Live, which aims to encourage young skilled workers to relocate from metropolitan areas to the Orana region, by promoting the benefits of living and working through a new website and social media.

RDA Orana’s BioHub Project is getting closer to becoming a reality, following completion of the pre-feasibility study that indicated strong economic viability, and ongoing discussions with potential investors.

Cobar Shire Council will host a public meeting on Friday 12 August at 5pm at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club for anyone interested in learning more about the opportunities that a Cobar BioHub will provide.  Mark Glover of EcoWaste Pty Ltd will be at the meeting, and will give a presentation explaining the BioHub concept and how landholders can benefit.  RDA Orana project staff will also be attending.  Landholders will be able to register their interest and support for the proposal, so that they can be kept informed of progress and be among the first to take advantage of the opportunities created by the BioHub when it becomes operational.

Potential for Warrumbungle Geopark is rock solid

Discussions have begun about establishing a Geopark in the Orana region. Recently Professor Patrick McKeever, Head of Earth Sciences at UNESCO, addressed participants in a “round table” discussion hosted by RDA Orana and Warrumbungle Shire Council in Coonabarabran.  Professor McKeever is an expert in the establishment and maintenance of Geoparks.   He provided information about the benefits that Geoparks bring to their communities and shared advice on the application process.  He was suitably impressed with the Warrumbungles National Park, which exists in large part because of its geological significance, and was optimistic about its potential to form the core of a Geopark in the Warrumbungle and Castlereagh area.

RDA Orana was excited to host South Korean Consul General Whie Jin Lee in Dubbo in late March. While in the region, he met a number of surviving Korean War veterans and their family members. During a formal reception, the Consul General acknowledged the sacrifices made by the veterans during the Korean War, paid respect to them and their families and awarded Peace medals. The event was very well attended by war veterans and their families and also regional businesses supporting the Korean Trainee Project, of which the Consul General is a very strong advocate.
