Respite centre project becoming a reality

The dream of having a respite centre for people with disabilities in Trangie is quickly becoming a reality thanks to funding received from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

Announced in the first round of the BBRF, the Federal Government is contributing $176,000 towards the $350,000 development.

Construction of the Trangie Respite Centre is now underway in Temoin St, with the facility to make a huge improvement to the town’s health services
infrastructure and an enormous difference in the lives of adults and children whose needs will be met.

RDA Orana Chair John Walkom said the centre will make a world of difference to Trangie residents who have needed this for a long time and to the future
of disability services in the town.

“This is a vital service that does not currently exist for Trangie residents,” he said.

“It’s wonderful to see this need being met in one of our western townships.”

He also said that RDA Orana was active in the application development for the funding as well as providing a letter of support to Trangie Community
Connection Inc.

The respite centre will complement an existing day facility for people with disabilities by making accommodation available for those who have to travel
long distances, and prevent forced relocation of families seeking disability services for their dependents.

Representatives of the Trangie Community Connection Inc worked tirelessly to ensure its success and the development was one of four projects in the
Federal Parkes electorate to be approved under the BBRF’s Infrastructure Projects Stream which allocates up to 50 per cent of its total cost.

The BBRF supports the Federal Government’s commitment to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future
by funding projects in regional Australia. The two streams of funding available under the program are the Infrastructure Projects Stream and the
Community Investments Stream.

The BBRF was boosted in the 2018 Federal Budget, with the announcement of an additional $200M for the program.
